We Need To Talk About Kevin:
My Thoughts On The Episode
My Thoughts On The Episode
I have been anxiously awaiting the premiere of Season 8
since the ending of Season 7, “Survival Of The Fittest". When I researched
a while back and found out that the premiere episode was titled "We Need
To Talk About Kevin", needless to say I was disappointed. I wondered what
they could possibly have to link this Kevin character to this season, let alone
naming an episode after him. When Kevin came about towards the end of Season 7,
I didn't care much for him. It takes a lot for me, someone who has been a diehard
Supernatural fan since the premiere of Season 1 back in 2004 to like a
character. I feel like if they bring a character on, they really have to mesh
well with Sam & Dean, unless they are just fillers and usually get killed
off by whatever monster/spirit/leviathan that the boys happen to be hunting in
that episode. On that note, I really miss Ruby (blonde Ruby), not offense to
Jared's wife but she did not do the character of Ruby the justice that Katie
Cassidy did. I also really miss Bobby, I was happy that they brought him back
as a ghost but to see him go all vengeful spirit and watching the boys was
heartbreaking.
As I began to watch the episode I was more and more
impressed, despite the crappy episode title. I was impressed with the other
writers of Supernatural, keep in mind that Supernatural has gone through the
change of several lead writers. First Eric Kripke, then Sera Gamble, and now
she stepped down and there is another lead writer. Still, all in all, the show
rocks! Seeing Dean Return from Purgatory right off the bat made me one happy fan
girl. I love Dean! And rugged, dirty, sexy, sweaty Dean is even better! I like
how they left it somewhat of a mystery as to what happened to Dean there,
instead of letting all the marbles out of the bag right away. I was really
curious when Dean dug up that grave and began cutting his arm open...and then
appeared what I believe is a vampire, named Benny. I find it so strange that
Dean helped this Benny character and also remained friends with him. As the show
went on, I seemed to like him more and more. I like how Benny's character seems
to fill the void that Castiel left.
Btw, where is Castiel? And why did Dean say he didn't make
it out of Purgatory?!
I loved how the boys got back together, splashing holy
water, borax and slashing each other’s arms with the knife. Demon, check.
Leviathan, check. Shape shifter, check. That was hilarious. And then they hug,
which is like the classic Winchester brother's first episode scene that always brings
tears to my eyes. Whether its Dean back from Hell/Purgatory or Sam getting out
of Lucifer's cage soulless. It never fails to make me one happy fan girl to see
the Winchester Brother's embrace! :) I'm curious to know why Sam didn't look
for Dean, after 7 Seasons they have always looked for each other, never giving
up hope. But this time something inside Sam changed, he just let it go when
Dean disappeared after Dick Roman exploded. Hopefully we will find out more to
that story as the season goes on.
I don't know how I feel about the whole torn apart and
tension between the brothers that they are portraying this season. The
flashbacks from Purgatory are awesome. It seemed as if Purgatory was like
Dean's own world war. He could do what he loved to do, which was hunting, without
the technicalities of actually killing people and dealing with the law. It is
Purgatory after all. I hope there is more to come in the future episodes to
tell us more about Dean's yearlong journey in Purgatory. And also what the heck
happened to Cas?!
Now Amelia, Sam's new love interest. I don't know how I feel
about her yet. I've only ever loved one love interest the show has given Sam,
and that was Sara Blake from Season 1, and we never saw her again. I love how
Sam rescued that dog, such an adorable thing. I had a hard time establishing if
Amelia was the veterinarian or if they just showed that small clip of her in
bed when Sam was leaving...I guess we will find out.
Kevin now comes into play...considering I didn't care too
much for Kevin last season; I really like what his character brings to the show
now. I like how Dean gave him a little hunter tough love and basically said, you’re
in it now and you’re not getting out. Kevin is almost like Castiel, without all
the angel superpowers, but seems to mesh more with Sam than Dean. I think they
would make a good team together. Also that little fact, that Kevin mentioned,
about closing the gates of hell forever and banishing every demon. Hell yeah
Kev!
And lastly, the mysterious call from Benny at the end. Dean
doesn't want Sam to know that he is talking to this Benny character. Now
considering Benny seems to have helped Dean escape purgatory and also became
his friend, I do not know why Dean wouldn't want to introduce him to Sam.
There's more to that story that I'm sure we will find out in time.
Overall, I rate this episode an 8. It would have been nice
to see a little Castiel or Bobby, but I guess they have to keep us on our toes
and guessing. Round of applause to the writers of Supernatural! <3 :)
